Questionnaire Results

February 2020

In February of 2020 the Title IX Office and Shelter From the Storm distributed a digital questionnaire to the EOU Community in an effort to understand what the EOU Community knew about Title IX and privileged resources.  Three hundred and two (302) employees and students responded. Some of the questions had multiple correct answers; please keep this in mind when reviewing the outcomes below as they will not equal 100% for a given question. The following are the results of this questionnaire.

Question 1

What is Title IX?

Of the 302 who replied, approximately 67% selected “A contact to get help with bullying, sexual assault, stalking, and more.”  The next largest group at a little more than 46% selected “A required service to the EOU community.” The third largest group of 21.5% chose “I don’t know.” The last two options had results of “A big scary place” at 1.3% and “Is only for athletes” at .99% No participant skipped this question.

Answer 

Title IX is a required service for such topics as bullying, sexual assault, stalking, and more, as mandated by the federal government because EOU receives funding at the federal level.  Title IX is available to everyone, including staff and students. Question 2

Why do we have Title IX?

Of the total who responded, 69% selected “It is a resource for students to get help related to sexual misconduct.”  Almost 50% selected “Meets federal requirement for funding from the government.” And, about 50% selected the answer “It is a resource for employees to get help related to sexual misconduct.”  The smallest selection on this question had 20% who selected “I don’t know” as their answer. One participant skipped this question.

Answer

EOU and other educational institutions that receive federal financial support are required to have Title IX services.  These services are for questions and issues related to sex-based crimes such as stalking, bullying, hate crimes, sexual assault, and more.  EOU students and employees can access these resources to learn more and/or file a report. Question 3

What is a Privileged Campus Advocate?

Almost 75% of respondents selected “A confidential contact on campus that will not share information with anyone.”  The next largest group of almost 49% selected “A contact option to discuss sexual harassment.” Closely following the second group, about 45% selected “A contact option to discuss dating violence.”  The fourth largest group of a little over 21% chose “I don’t know.” The last group at almost 10% chose the option that a Privileged Campus Advocate is “A great person to have lunch with.” One participant skipped this question.

Answer

The Privileged Campus Advocate (PCA) provides confidential advocacy and support services for anyone going through dating or domestic violence, sex trafficking, sexual harassment, assault, and/or stalking. The PCA offers a safe and confidential space to receive information and resources while maintaining 100% confidentiality. Question 4

What issues should I see a Privileged Campus Advocate about?

The answer “domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking” received the largest responses of 78%. Following next at a little more than 55% selected discrimination, bias, and hate crimes.  Third group at 49% selected “bullying and suicide.” A little more than 19% chose general counseling and about 20% did not know what issues one sees a Privileged Campus Advocate about. One participant skipped this question.

The Privileged Campus Advocate(PCA) provides confidential advocacy and support services for anyone going through dating or domestic violence, sex trafficking, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and/or stalking. The PCA offers a space to receive information and resources while maintaining 100% confidentiality. 

The Title IX Coordinator and Deputy Coordinators offer services for discrimination, bias, hate crimes, bullying and more.  Employees and students can access these services as needed to ask questions or report as a Responsible Employee. Question 5

The following are characteristics of a Responsible Employee:

The largest portion of participants (71%) selected the answer “Can help a staff or employee find resources about sex-based crimes like stalking, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and more.”  The second largest group at 60% selected the response “Is obligated to report concerns to the Title IX Coordinator.” The next group at almost 34% chose “Makes every meeting.” Whereas a little more than 16% did not know the “…characteristics of a Responsible Employee.”  Three participants skipped this question.

Answer

You are expected to report any information you are aware of, whether it is from a student or employee sharing, or you become aware of a story through third person. Responsible employees are required to report incidents of gender-based discrimination or harassment, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, or retaliation to the Title IX Coordinator.
