EOU was certified as an official Tree Campus USA university on January 9, 2016, and has met annual recertification standards since that time.

“Congratulations to Eastern Oregon University for earning Tree Campus USA recognition,” said Mary Sweeney, Program Manager for the Arbor Day Foundation. “Your diligence in improving the environment and quality of life at Eastern Oregon University contributes to a healthier, more sustainable world for us all.”

To obtain this distinction, which is only given to accredited colleges and universities, EOU met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA:

  • Establishment of a tree advisory committee.
  • Evidence of a campus tree-care plan.
  • Dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program.
  • An Arbor Day observance.
  • The sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

About the Program

Tree Campus USA is a program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, which recognizes college and university campuses across the nation that manage their campus trees effectively, develop connectivity with the community beyond campus borders to foster healthy, urban forests, and utilize service learning opportunities centered on campus, and community forestry efforts.

A committee was formed consisting of students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding community to develop the Tree Campus Plan and complete the application for entrance into the program.
