March 17, 2020 – 2nd Annual Blue and Gold weekend canceled

With the cancelation of the 2019-20 spring sports season, the Second Annual Blue and Gold Weekend has also been canceled with plans to resume next year.
Although an official schedule of events had not been released, the weekend planned to include last year’s activities such as the Mountaineer Athletic Association Golf Scramble & Poker Tournament, the Men’s & Women’s Soccer Alumni games, and the football spring game. This year also had planned for the first time a Softball and Baseball Alumni Slowpitch game, a Family Fun Fest, and a “Baseball is Back” Dinner auction.
“This decision was not easy,” states director of athletics Anji Weissenfluh. “But with the cancellation of spring sports and putting the safety of our student-athletes, fans, and community first, we have decided to cancel Blue & Gold Weekend.”
On Monday, the NAIA and CCC decided to cancel all postseason tournaments. In conjunction with these decisions, the Eastern Oregon athletic department also canceled all spring sports competition including practices for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic school year. EOU could reevaluate the cancellation of practices after the CDC’s 8-week recommendation to cease all practices and competitions.

This decision has been made in consultation with EOU’s Leadership Team’s efforts to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus and with the best interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes, campus personnel, working and event personnel, and all those who attend Eastern Oregon University events.
“Thank you to everyone who has played a role in the planning of it this year,” states assistant director of athletics Samantha Flett, “On behalf of EOU Athletics, I want to thank our sponsors, Lana Anderson of Blue Summit Realty, and Teri Champlin of Fairway Mortgage. I hope to have both of them back next year, they have been extremely supportive in getting this weekend off the ground. I plan to pick up where we left off, and make this weekend a great success next year and for years following.”
