Engage in Positive Citizenship and Character Development

  • 1. How does this activity complement the University, Student Affairs, or unit’s mission, or meet the unit’s objectives?
    • The educational values, practices and mission of the institution determine the standards by which we will conduct our intercollegiate athletics program. EOU Athletics is committed to the education of the student-athlete as a whole person by expecting positive behavior and character development. As role models throughout the Eastern Oregon region, EOU student-athletes and personnel have a social responsibility to improve the community they live in. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics personnel and student-athletes will reflect a positive image by adhering to high standards of conduct reflected in the NAIA Champions of Character Program, the EOU Student Handbook and the EOU Student Representative Code of Conduct. As an NAIA Institution, Eastern Oregon University believes in the Champions of Character Initiative. We pledge to strive for excellence in the 5 core value areas of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Servant leadership

    • By participating activities that are based on Positive Citizenship and Character Development student athletes will be exposed to theories and practices that promote consideration of their own morals and values.
    • By participating activities that are based on Positive Citizenship and Character Development student athletes will be held to a higher level of accountability for their personal behavior.
    • By participating activities that are based on Positive Citizenship and Character Development student athletes will engage in team and department community service projects.
  • 5. How will the achievement of this learning outcome be evaluated, measured, or assessed? Describe measures to be used.
    • It will be assessed by monitoring of conduct issues and outcomes of student athletes and by participation in department wide and individual sport service projects.
    • Athletics will conduct team meetings to thoroughly review student athlete cone of conduct, track conduct issues, and identify coaching staff that share like philosophies.
    • Team and department community service projects will be mandatory.
