There is so much more to the program than just taking classes in a foreign country. You’ll develop a global perspective, your attitudes will become international and the memories you’ll make will last a lifetime. Studying abroad may just be the defining moment that will change your life forever. The experience often builds a noticeable sense of independence and self-confidence and opens doors to new opportunities, friends, and career paths.
Chances are if you’re already using federal or university financial aid, those same funds can be put towards your semester abroad. This includes Pell grants, SEOG grants, Stafford loans, Perkins loans, PLUS loans, merit scholarships and private funding.
Study Abroad Process
- Check your eligibility: You need sophomore standing (45+ credit hours), good academic and disciplinary standing, and possibly a minimum GPA depending on the program. Most EOU programs don’t require foreign language proficiency, so don’t rule anything out on that basis.
- Meet with the Study Abroad advisor: Visit the International Student Services / Study Abroad office in Hoke 319 or contact Mika Morton by emailing mnmorton@eou.edu, or by calling (541) 962-3588. She can help you figure out which programs fit your major, timeline, and budget.
- Choose a program and provider: EOU works with several outside partners, including GEO Study Abroad, AIFS, API, ISA, IE3 Global, and Kei Abroad. Compare destinations, term length, and cost.
- Plan how the credits fit your degree: Work with the Study Abroad Advisor and your Academic Advisor to confirm which courses abroad will transfer and count toward your major, minor, or general education requirements, so you don’t lose time toward graduation.
- Sort out financial aid and payment: Most federal and university aid can apply to an approved study abroad program. Meet with the Financial Aid Office to get a program cost summary and understand disbursement timing, since aid disburses the week the term begins and can’t be adjusted for early program payments.
- Submit your program application: Application steps and deadlines vary by provider, so follow the specific instructions from GEO, AIFS, ISA, etc. Your Study Abroad advisor can guide you through paperwork like passport, visa, and health insurance requirements too.
- Prepare for departure: Handle logistics like passport/visa applications, health insurance, immunizations, housing, and orientation sessions your program or EOU requires before you leave.
