Christmas in January!

Courtney Millsap (Station Manager)

For many years, Christmas has not been a big deal for me. It meant more about spending time with family and friends. I would argue that the best presents were the ones that were not expected. The ones that show up in the months and days that presents are not an expectation. That has happened recently at the station.

When we returned from the winter break, there were 20+ CDs waiting in our mail box. Sure, we always get music, but they are always so spread out. The nice thing? It was also containing some phenomenal music. My favorites were Highland Brothers Band, Nemes, Hey Rosetta!, and Light Club. Those weren’t the only surprise CDs we received. We have also seen the new Decemberists album and the new album from Belle and Sebastian. There are always some excited squeals when we get new albums from bands we know and love.

The CDs we received after Winter break

CDs were not our only presents. Granted, the other ones we had to pay for, but still, it felt like Christmas when they arrived. The first was new headphones. Now, people may be wondering why there was excitement about new headphones. Well, we hadn’t had working ones in over a year… So, yay! Better sounding shows! The other was a PA system. We chose a Fender Passport Conference, so not the fanciest thing on the market, but it will get the job done. By far, this was my favorite thing we received. The possibilities of what we can do now, in terms of providing services, are getting closer to being endless. As soon as I know the debut of the system, I will be sure to share it on the KEOL Facebook.

We have also finally purchased the external hard drives! They showed up the day following the other two packages. As I am typing this blog out, I keep pausing to insert CDs to rip. What am I currently ripping? Siouxsie and the Banshees’ album Superstition. As it stands right now, we are only digitizing the CDs. A decision about the vinyl records has not been made yet. Ideally, we will be keeping them, but there are somethings in there that I will pull out that are in pristine condition, maybe being played once.

The final “presents” that I was excited about wasn’t anything that we really had to purchase, well, one of them we had to pay to have it printed, but that doesn’t count. Papa Lory finished the second issue of the KEOL Alumni Newsletter, check out the links to it under the KEOL Alumni tab. However, the thing bringing me the most joy is the compliments on our new logo and on the DJ Schedule flyer that we distributed around campus. Check out the new logo in the top right of the page. And see the flyer below!

KEOL Winter DJ Schedule

As I was looking through our recent Facebook photos, I realized that there is one specific “present” that I forgot to mention. Since I have taken over as Station Manager, the “On-Air” light has not been working. Well, that is not the case anymore. Thanks to KEOL’s newest DJ, Gym Noise, the light is now working again! Thank you Gym!
