All throughout my tenure as Station Manager, I had a draft blog floating around called “Chaos Theory” and obviously it was never published. Well, guess what, here is my abbreviated version of it! (Maybe I will edit the draft I had and eventually it will see the day of light, but that will be awhile.)

Managing a college radio station in chaotic, especially one as small as KEOL. There is always something going on, something that needs your attention, and things tend to slip between the cracks. The website was one of the many things that slipped, and I apologize for that.

Not to make excuses, but KEOL faced some pretty big changes and technical difficulties throughout last year. I barely had time to do what was necessary, let alone worry about the smaller things. Thus, I dropped the ball.
Here is a little glimpse of spring term at KEOL:

We were teaching the final installment of FM Broadcasting, even though the final installment was supposed to be in the Fall.

We were starting the process of transitioning into the EOU Media Group, which will be discussed in length in another blog. The short story though, is that KEOL and The Voice are now one entity, but the listeners and readers will not see much a difference. As Station Manager, I was writing up job descriptions and working with the university to figure out what exactly the EOU Media Group Director would look like.

We were trying to figure out a new location for KEOL, as well as how that move was going to work. It was a long conversation, and eventually it was settled, but then KEOL faced the task of boxing everything up and moving it out of our bungalow. I am not sure what the final box count was, but I do know we filled two dorm rooms with physical media. There are still unanswered questions regarding the move, such as what is going to happen to our physical media.

We were also dealing with a damaged antenna. Now, this one is not even fixed yet, and is still a problem. We were able to problem solve and figure out what was not the problem, but we still do not know the exact root of the problem. There are many options available to us, and hopefully that will start to get figured out once we are back on-air.

I am sure many other things were being handled in the spring, but it is kinda one big blur of chaos.
After dealing with the chaos, for the entire year, we have set some new positions into motion. One of those is the EOU Media Group Advisor who will have a hands-on approach to advising KEOL. This person will take on the stress of broken equipment when the Station Manager needs to focus on other things, including their school work. Another approach that is happening is that volunteers are taking on a bigger role at KEOL, with DJs volunteering to take on aspects of the station management.

Now that I am in a smaller role at KEOL, I will have the time to make the website what I imagined many moons ago: weekly blogs, updated calendars, DJ information, KEOL alumni pages, and the list goes on and on. In addition, I will be the woman behind the screen of KEOL’s social media.
