Kirsten Furlong, director of the Visual Arts Center at Boise State University, is the juror this year. In addition to selecting works to include in the exhibit, she will choose several to be recognized with cash awards.

Furlong’s recent solo exhibitions include “Repeat and Shift” at Enso Art Space in Boise and “Standing Still and Moving Through the Wilderness” at Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, Ariz. She was also recently an artist-in-residence at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Northern Michigan and her work was included in the November exhibition, “Paper West,” at Gittins Gallery at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She earned her bachelor of fine arts from the University of Nebraska in Omaha and her master of fine arts from Boise State University.

Furlong will give a talk on her studio practice Tuesday, May 10 at 6 p.m. in Huber Auditorium in Badgley Hall. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Two additional scholarships will also be presented. The sixth annual Kathelene Galloway Memorial Scholarship is a $500 award given to a sophomore or junior level art major who exhibits exemplary technical and conceptual skill. It is made in memory of Galloway, a professor of printmaking and drawing at EOU for over a decade, who passed away in December 2009. The highly dedicated and much loved artist, teacher and colleague was a passionate advocate for her students, art, artists and EOU and lived to share knowledge and the wonder that comes with discovery.

The seventh annual Joseph Dickerson Memorial Award is made in memory of Joe Dickerson, an EOU freshman who was killed in a 2009 automobile accident. He was a model student whose creative energy and enthusiasm for learning was infectious. Following their loss, Joe’s parents Doug and Kyla Dickerson made a generous contribution to the EOU art program, which chose to use the funds to endow an award in his name to be presented each year to a student who the faculty feels best exemplifies Joe’s dedication, curiosity and creative spirit.
