LA GRANDE, Ore. – If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a teacher, Eastern Oregon University’s (EOU) Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program can turn that dream into reality—in just 10 months.
This immersive program blends academic coursework with hands-on teaching experience, preparing you to step confidently into the classroom. Whether you want to teach elementary or secondary students, EOU’s MAT program equips you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the MAT program follows a hybrid format. You can complete coursework online while student teaching anywhere in Oregon. It starts with a one-week, in-person residency in La Grande in late July or early August. There, you’ll meet faculty, connect with your peers, and build a strong foundation before launching into your year of teaching.
From day one, you won’t just be learning about teaching—you’ll be teaching. Starting in August, you’ll step into a classroom and gain hands-on experience throughout the school year. By graduation, you’ll have already completed a year of teaching, making you a competitive candidate in the job market.
Throughout the remainder of the program, candidates participate in hybrid classes, which will have required scheduled times for synchronous meetings using a remote platform.
At EOU, you won’t go through this journey alone. The MAT program uses a cohort model, meaning you’ll move through the program with a group of peers who share your passion for education. Whether you choose Elementary or Secondary Education, you’ll build lasting connections and support one another every step of the way.
The MAT program is designed to be completed in 10 months, but if you need a more flexible option, a two-year track is available. Whether you’re already teaching on a restricted license or balancing other responsibilities, you can earn your degree at a pace that works for you.
EOU is committed to helping graduates succeed. Each spring, EOU hosts an exclusive Education Job Fair where school administrators from across the Pacific Northwest connect with our students. You’ll have the opportunity to meet potential employers, participate in mock interviews, and get a head start on your job search. Career advising services are also available to help guide you through the hiring process.
The priority application deadline is March 1—don’t miss your chance to take the next step toward a rewarding career in education. Applying is simple: submit your transcripts for review, and we’ll guide you through the process. If you qualify for Multiple Measures, you may even be able to waive the state-approved content exam requirement.
