Eastern Oregon University Regional High School Mathematics Competition
The state of Oregon holds an annual High School Mathematics Skills Competition. Competitors in the State competition must first place as a top finisher of one of the many regional qualifying competitions held throughout Oregon. Eastern Oregon University holds one of these annual regional competition every year on the third Tuesday of Spring Term. Check out the academic calendar to plan ahead!
This years regional contest will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 on the EOU campus in La Grande, OR. Top performers on the state qualifying exam in levels III-VI will receive invitations to the state tournament, being held this year at the U of O on May 16, 2015. Students in grades 8-12 are welcome to participate. (Small schools may use students in 7th grade to complete a team). The state contest this year includes four categories: Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and Calculus. However, as in previous years, our regional competition includes six categories – the four above plus Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Click here for a brief schedule of the last years events (timing will remain roughly the same every year, rooms and activities may change). This year we are pleased to offer a $1000 EOU scholarship for each of the 1st place finishers in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus!
The EOU regional competition includes the state qualifying exams for everyone plus team events later in the day. The cost this year is $30 per team. After registering an invoice will be sent for payment. Teams will consist of 15 students: three each from Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, and three more from among the combined Pre-Calculus/Calculus participants. Schools are allowed to have many participating teams. Calculators are allowed for the qualifying exam, but not for the other events. Click on the following links for descriptions of the team events: Math Bee, Solve That Problem, and Math Relay.
Lunch will be provided free this year!
If you and your students would like to stay on campus for lunch, we invite you to visit the Resident Dining Room in Hoke Hall. Naturally if your students really want to go to the fast food restaurants we have in town, go for it! We need to inform the dining hall of the number of extra people to expect and buy enough lunch tickets for all who want to eat on campus. Therefore we will not provide the free lunch if you do not register by March 27, 2015.
All teachers are invited to the Snack and Chat during the state exam. Relax, eat, and chat with fellow eastern Oregon teachers and EOU Math faculty.
