The Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) holds a High School Math Competition every year. Competitors at the State level must first place as a top finisher at their Regional Competition. The 2020 Eastern Oregon Regional High School Competition will take place at Eastern Oregon University on April 14, 2020.
Top performers on the state qualifying exam in levels III-VI will receive invitations to the state tournament. Keep an eye on the Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics Contests Page for more information on the date and location for this year’s state tournament.
Students in grades 8-12 are welcome to participate. (Small schools may use students in 7th grade to complete a team). The state contest this year includes four categories: Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Our regional competition includes six categories – the four above plus Pre-Algebra and Algebra I.
Below is a brief schedule of the events. This schedule will remain mostly the same from year to year. Any High Schools (including Charter Schools and Home Schools) in Eastern Oregon are encouraged to attend!
We are pleased to offer a $1000 EOU scholarship for each of the 1st place finishers in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus!
The EOU Regional Competition includes the state qualifying exams for everyone plus team events later in the day. The cost is $35 per team. Invoices are sent out the week before the contest. Teams consist of 15 students: three each from Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, and three more from among the combined Pre-Calculus/Calculus participants. Schools are allowed to have multiple participating teams. Calculators are allowed for the qualifying exam, but not for the other events. Click on the following links for descriptions of the team events: Math Bee, Solve That Problem, and Math Relay.
Lunch is provided for all participants and chaperones!
Please register by March 31, 2020 so that we can inform our dining services of the number of extra people to expect through the lunch line that day. We can make adjustments to team rosters after registration.
All teachers are invited to a Snack & Chat with fellow teachers and EOU Math professors during the state exam. Relax and chat with fellow eastern Oregon High School Math teachers and EOU Math faculty, enjoy coffee and other light refreshments.
