LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University’s Eastern Oregon Social Science Journal has achieved top honors on the national stage, earning First Place with Special Merit and Most Outstanding Departmental Journal from the American Scholastic Press Association. The prestigious awards highlight the exceptional research, writing, and editorial dedication of EOU students.
Volume V (2022–24) of the Eastern Oregon Social Science Journal has been awarded First Place with Special Merit for schools with more than 2,500 students and Most Outstanding Departmental Journal by the American Scholastic Press Association. Produced by student editors Oreng Kikuo and Saraï Clunie Paul, the award-winning journal includes contributions from students in Eastern Oregon University’s English; Politics, Policy, and Public Administration; and Psychology programs.
Regarding producing the issue of the journal, Editor-in-Chief Kikuo claimed that, “The Eastern Oregon Social Science Journal has been a fantastic introduction to the process of editing and publishing for me. Before the journal, I had zero idea about all the hard work, communication, patience, and time it took to get even one article ready for publication.” Reflecting on her favorite part of editing the journal, Kikuo added, “The most rewarding part of the job, however, is reading all the different types of research that the students are capable of pulling off: the content, the interviews, and research methods, the inspiration behind their subjects, beautiful artwork submissions, and all the students and faculty working as a team to decide how it will all come together.”
Eastern Oregon University President Kelly Ryan shared that, “I’m thrilled that the Eastern Oregon Social Science Journal has been recognized for its excellence. EOU faculty mentorship of our students is among our finest assets; this award shows how we create experiential learning opportunities for students with the guidance of faculty to help them be successful. The student research displayed in the journal similarly shows how we enable students’ critical thinking and deep research to find solutions.”
Editor-in-Chief Kikuo and Assistant Editor Paul are currently hard at work producing the coming issue (Volume XXVIII) of the Eastern Oregon Science Journal, which they expect will arrive on campus this Spring Term. This issue will include contributions by students in EOU’s Biology, Math, and Psychology programs. Both the Eastern Oregon Social Science Journal and Eastern Oregon Science Journal are partially funded through student government allocations, but the EOU Foundation also supports their continued publication through generous donations from alumni, faculty, and staff. Donations are accepted online at: www.eou.edu/scijou/donate. For more information visit the journals’ website at: www.eou.edu/scijou.
