LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Nightingale Gallery at Eastern Oregon University concludes its exposition season with the annual “All-Campus Juried Student Exhibition” featuring work by EOU students from a variety of academic disciplines. An opening reception was held on Friday, May 17, 2024. The annual All-Campus Juried Student Exhibition will run from May 17 through June 14.
Two awards chosen by the Art faculty included the Dickerson Award, and the Galloway Scholarship and were awarded to Av Hughes and Jack Hess respectively.
The Joseph Dickerson Memorial Award is in memory of Joe Dickerson an EOU freshman tragically killed in a 2009 auto accident. Following the loss of their son, Joe’s parents, Doug and Kyla Dickerson made a gift of funds to the EOU Art program. Joe was a model student whose creative energy and enthusiasm for learning were infectious. In light of this the EOU Art Program chose to use the funds so generously given by the Dickerson family to endow an award in their son’s name to be presented annually to a student who the Art faculty feels best exemplifies Joe’s dedication, curiosity, and creative spirit.
The Kathelene Galloway Memorial Scholarship is a $500 Scholarship presented to an Art major who exhibits curiosity, dedication to craft, and support and encouragement for their peers. The award is made in memory of Kathelene Galloway, a professor of Printmaking and Drawing at EOU. Galloway, who passed away suddenly in December 2009, was a highly dedicated and much-loved artist, teacher and colleague. And a passionate advocate for her students, artists, and EOU. Galloway exemplified the excellence to which we encourage our students to endeavor.
Other awards chosen by Juror, and curator Kendra Roberts included:
Best in Show: Cira Mesubed for her acrylic painting, “dearly”
Special Recognition Awards: Hadley Marshall for her mixed media sculpture, “Pillow Talk”
Claudia Juarez for her Inkjet print, “Disdain.”
Honorable Mentions: Paloma Cooke for her photograph, “Self Portrait,” and Tess Cahill for her relief print, “Alder.”
