Safety Committees

EOU has two safety committees that meet regularly on campus. The EOU Safety Committee fulfills the Oregon-OSHA requirements for employers to establish and administer a safety committee. This safety committee is intended to communicate and evaluate safety and health issues found on campus. The second committee is our Chemical Hygiene Committee which oversees our Chemical Hygiene Plan. This committee works to minimize the hazards found in laboratory settings and from the handling of hazardous chemicals.

Campus Safety Committee

The EOU Safety Committee is made up of volunteer members or elected employees from the various labor divisions at EOU, as well as individuals from our partnerships such as OHSU and ODFW. This committee meets regularly to review safety-related incidents and concerns. The safety committee also completes quarterly inspections of the EOU campus. The meetings are open to any EOU employee (faculty, staff, student-worker) that wishes to attend. If you are interested in becoming a member of the safety committee please contact the safety committee at safety-group@eou.edu.

Chemical Hygiene Committee

The Chemical Hygiene Committee at EOU oversees the Chemical Hygiene Plan which outlines the various policies and procedures for laboratory work practices. It also is intended to minimize hazardous chemical exposure to the students, staff, faculty, and guests who are present in the laboratory settings. The Chemical Hygiene Committee fulfills the requirements of Oregon-OSHA, DEQ, and Oregon State Fire Marshall. It provides expert advice on issues related to the implementation of the Chemical Hygiene Plan as well as to review campus incidents and best laboratory practices in order to make the best recommendations and promote a safe working environment within the laboratory.  Any questions about the committee or Chemical Hygiene Plan can be directed to the current chair Emma Skillings, at feldkae@eou.edu.
