April 28, 2022 LA GRANDE, Ore. – Stop and listen to an abstract Oregon artist who’s traveled and published worldwide and covered everything from artistic practice to far reaching socioeconomic issues. Hear it all from the source at the Bean Gilsdorf Visiting Artist Talk.
Artist and juror of the All-Campus Juried Student Exhibition, Bean Gilsdorf, comes to Eastern Oregon University this May to discuss her studio practice and other artistic experiences in preparation for the exhibition.
“She’s an artist and a writer, currently based in Portland. She’s exhibited her work very widely throughout the U.S. and internationally and also written for many major publications,” said Professor of Art Cory Peeke.
Gilsdorf’s work has been exhibited in notable locations around the United States, such as Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, and even featured in exhibitions as far away as Poland, China and South America.
Her work and writings cover a mixture of historical reflection as related to contemporary cultural and economic issues, along with social and cultural progressivism such as feminist issues, art appropriation, and socioeconomic impacts on artist practices. Her writing has been featured in publications such as “Art in America”, and she has received the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Arts Writers Grant award along with two Fulbright Fellowships.
Gilsdorf also previously worked with EOU Associate Professor of Art Susan Murrell on an interview project for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
As juror, Gilsdorf will be responsible for judging student art pieces for inclusion in the upcoming All-Campus Juried Student Exhibition, along with selecting participating pieces for special awards.
Gilsdorf will likely discuss her own studio and artistic practices, experiences and other subjects related to her art and writing during the talk.
“I think attendees will get an interesting point of view from an artist who is not from our area, who is a bit more cosmopolitan and immersed in both the fields of visual art and writng. It will present a broader picture of the art world,” Peeke said.
Gilsdorf’s talk takes place at 6 p.m., May 5 in the Huber Auditorium in Badgley Hall. The presentation is free and open to the public.
