Eastern Oregon University values the diversity of its student body, including the unique experiences, interests, and intellectual pursuits of students which may lead to the acquisition of knowledge at the college level. College-level learning is the same, whether acquired in the traditional college classroom or through non-collegiate courses or activities. EOU is committed to providing all its learners with equal opportunities to be recognized and validated for what they know and can do, including by providing high-quality pathways to acquire a college degree.
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), also known as Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), is an academic process that offers students the opportunity to earn credits for college-level learning if acquired outside the traditional classroom. There are many ways students can earn credit for prior learning by demonstrating college-level knowledge gained outside the classroom.
Standardized exams may include AP, CLEP, DSST, IB; EOU can also award credit based on comprehensive exams developed by campus faculty.
Faculty award credit as appropriate for evaluation of a student’s portfolio or demonstration of their learning from a variety of experiences and non-credit activities. At EOU this is called “Assessment of Experiential Learning”.
EOU may award credit for training and credentials that meet the learning objectives of a degree program, based on evaluations/recommendations provided by national organizations that evaluate training offered by employers or the military (ACE, NCCRS). At EOU this is called “Agency Sponsored Learning”.
