Public Services Student Assistants (PSS) support the library’s mission by providing materials and services for all members of the Eastern Oregon community. PSS are assigned to monitor Circulation or info commons desks during open hours and provide excellent customer service to all users of the library and its services. This position is only for the regular academic year and excludes term breaks and summer terms.

Job Duration This position is available during the regular academic year, excluding term breaks and the summer term.
Type of work schedule Fixed schedule; set days/times
Estimated numbers of hours per weekShifts are generally 2 to 3 hours long, and students typically work 6-8  hours a week, with an average of 3 to 4 shifts per week. You also have the option to pick up additional open shifts or request time off as needed. Per the EOU student employee policy, a  student employee can work no more than 29 hours a week.
Experiential Learning:– Develop interpersonal skills by working with diverse populations 
– Learn the key components of working in a team environment
– Learn tools and develop practical skills to problem-solve in a public service environment
– Gain knowledge of using library resources 
– Gain knowledge of using library software systems
Professional Development:Students receive circulation and reference training, attend a fall team meeting, and receive performance reviews at the end of each term.
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:– Use library software to check materials in/out
– Assist patrons with computers/printers
– Answer basic informational and directional questions
– Refer complex questions to librarians
– Provide routine data entry
– Support library staff with various projects
Minimum Qualifications:– Federal Work Study Award 
– Enrolled in at least six undergraduate credits per term, or a minimum of 9 graduate credit hours at a University partner program/ institution.
– In good academic standing (have a minimum GPA of 2.0)
– Have evening and weekend availability during the regular academic year. 
– Ability to work 4-12 hours a week without working more than a combination of 29 hours at this job or other University jobs
Preferred Qualifications:
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:– Communication and customer service skills when working with students, faculty, staff, and community patrons
– Technology skills and the ability to use library software systems
– Ability to use Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel
– Professional work ethic and independent time management skills
– Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to respond quickly 
– Flexibility and a positive attitude about working in a changing environment
– Detail-oriented on various tasks and projects
– Prior work in a library office or a similar work environment is preferred, but not required
