Letterpress Assistant

Hands-on creative role in EOU’s letterpress studio within CAHSS. Learn typesetting, inking, and printing while helping organize and maintain an active teaching space. Collaborate with faculty and peers in a supportive studio environment on campus.

Experiential Learning:Students will learn foundational letterpress terminology, tools, and techniques, including typesetting, inking, and printing. They will practice equipment operation and maintenance, organization and archival methods, troubleshooting, technical communication, and professional studio practices while reflecting on the history and significance of letterpress in design culture.
Professional Development:On-the-job training in letterpress practices, equipment safety, and studio operations provided by faculty or a studio technician.
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:– Learn letterpress processes including typesetting, inking, printing, and press maintenance under guidance.
– Organize and catalog equipment, type cases, plates, tools, and supplies.
– Maintain a clean and safe studio, following safety protocols.
– Document processes and best practices to build instructional manuals, labels, and guides.
– Troubleshoot minor mechanical/procedural issues under supervision.
– Conduct research on traditional and modern letterpress methods.
Minimum Qualifications:– Must be an on-campus student with federal financial aid-approved work-study awarded.
– Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
– Availability to work scheduled shifts between Monday and Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, depending on student availability.
Preferred Qualifications:– Interest in art, design, or printmaking.
– Strong problem-solving skills, great attention to detail, and self-starter attitude.
