LA GRANDE, Ore. – The La Grande Community Garden at EOU is now in its second year since reopening after the pandemic. We are hosting an open house on Thursday, September 19, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the corner of 13th and I St, across from Candy Cane Park in La Grande.
Highlights will include the recently completed patio with accessible raised garden beds, constructed by local Boy Scout Lucas Hudson for his Eagle Scout project. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the garden plots, learn about the benefits the garden offers, discover how to sign up for plots, and view the winter carrot plantings—a community science project with the Union County Master Gardeners.
Additionally, we’ll share details on upcoming fall work parties that anyone can join. Light refreshments will be served.
The garden is run by volunteers, with Northeast Oregon Network (NEON) serving as the fiscal agent, overseeing the garden’s income and expenditures.
The La Grande Community Garden at EOU aims to develop and expand available garden areas for growing, harvesting, and eating local foods, thereby strengthening family and community health through natural, organic, and renewable gardening methods.
Eastern Oregon University provides the land and water. The garden plots are available to the entire community with a sliding scale operations fee per plot, based on each gardener’s ability to pay. These fees cover day-to-day supplies, infrastructure improvements, and long-term development goals. Both monetary and in-kind donations are welcome and are tax-deductible under NEON’s nonprofit status. For more information, visit the La Grande Community Garden at EOU on Facebook.
