Nationally Recognized EOU Summer Bridge Program Welcomes Largest Class Yet
LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University (EOU) welcomed 47 students to the 2024 Summer Bridge Program, a supportive academic experience designed to ease new student’s transition into the university and community. This year’s program was collaboratively designed and supported by 18 student mentors, two undergraduate classroom assistants, and over a dozen faculty and staff.
The Summer Bridge Program at EOU provides incoming first-year students, international transfer students, and community college transfers with additional tools to help them succeed academically and personally. Students earn two college credits during the program, with all housing, books, and tuition costs covered by EOU.
“We’ve worked hard to create the most supportive bridge possible into the academic year,” said. Dr. Cori Brewster, Director of Summer Bridge, and Professor of English/Writing.
This year’s Summer Bridge Program focused on the theme “Stories of Place,” encouraging students to explore how narratives shape identity, community, and understanding. Students participated in field trips and engaged in workshops that connected to the theme, including a math workshop, a creative writing workshop, and a series of talks led by EOU and visiting faculty on their research. On Wednesday, students attended a special lecture on the history of rodeo by Dr. Tracey Hanshew, EOU Assistant Professor of History, in preparation for their final field trip to the Pendleton Round Up.
Designed in collaboration with EOU’s Office of Student Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, the program also supports students in accessing vital resources and services, including financial aid, food assistance, and academic support programs, preparing them for success throughout their time at EOU.
While the two-week Summer Bridge Program ran from September 3 to 14, 2024, it is part of a broader year-long initiative aimed at supporting students throughout their academic journey. Participants can earn an additional free credit during the fall term, enhancing their educational experience.
“Summer Bridge has become more than just a program—it’s a community,” said Brewster. “We aim to build relationships that last well beyond the first few weeks of school, fostering an ever thicker network of students, mentors, tutors, faculty, and staff that students can continue to engage throughout their academic careers.”
EOU invites incoming students to apply for future Summer Bridge sessions. The priority application deadline for next year is July 1, 2025. Selected students will receive a fully-funded opportunity to jumpstart their academic success while forging lasting connections with peers, faculty, and staff. For more information about the Summer Bridge Program, visit https://www.eou.edu/summer-bridge/.
