Maintaining Web Pages from Off Campus
EOU no longer allows widespread off-campus ftp access
- Departmental / institutional web pages should not be exclusively maintained from off campus.
- Departments should have someone at Eastern who at least knows how to upload pages.
- Modifications can then be e-mailed as attachments to that individual for on-campus ftp'ing.
- You can store the modified pages on any machine that supports incoming ftp and arrange for the on-campus assistant to ftp the files from you. When using ftp going out from EOU, be sure to use a passive-mode client such as Netscape or pasftp.
- Most modification of pages can be done at a local PC, followed by a toll call to the EOU dialups in PPP mode. There is no problem ftp'ing from those dialups, and with long-distance down to 5 cents a minute, the cost will be minimal.
- On a toll call to the EOU dialups in terminal mode, you can use the kermit protocol to upload files.
- Finally, if you are at a remote LAN connection and your network administrator can provide you with a STATIC (fixed) IP address for your own PC/Mac [ NOT for multiuser systems ], EOU can open the firewall for ftp'ing from that individual address. RANGES of addresses are NOT acceptable for this option.
