University Council Student Affairs Committee
February 28, 2013
Present: Doug Briney, Robin Weinman, Stephen Jenkins, Mikaila Wolf, Michelle Long,
Colleen Dunne-Cascio, Deven Baremore, Mary Fields
1. Approval of Minutes: a motion was made and seconded to approve the Minutes of the January 17, 2013 Student Affairs Committee meeting. Motion passed.
2. Action Items:
a. Student Alcohol and Other Drug Policy: it was mentioned that local law enforcement did notify the Office of Student Affairs regarding the State of Oregon Sanctions, indicating that they looked accurate. A discussion took place regarding the Policy Section. As a result, suggested revisions were made. A motion was made and seconded to approve the Student Alcohol and Other Drug Policy as revised. Motion passed. This policy will be brought forward to University Council.
a. Grievance Procedures: Dunne-Cascio indicated that the Grievance Procedures review request has been submitted to the Academic Standards Committee for review and action.
b. Academic Honesty Code: Dunne-Cascio indicated that the Academic Honesty Code has been reviewed by legal counsel. Minor edits have been suggested and will be made and moved forward in the revision/implementation process.
c. Student Hearings Committee Training Update: Part II of the training was conducted. The Part II training will be offered again the first of spring term for those that need to complete the training.
4. Information Items
a. Felony Conviction Procedures: Jenkins indicated that this procedure is driven by the possibility of individuals from juvenile correctional facilities applying to EOU and requesting to live in the residence halls. A discussion took place and it was suggested that “no juvenile or criminal conviction” be added to the first paragraph. It was also recommended that the policy be reviewed by legal counsel before implementation.
b. Time, Place, and Manner policy review/revisions: the policy needs to be reviewed for possible revisions. The committee will review the policy and bring forward any suggested revisions at the next committee meeting.
c. EPCC proposed revisions: Dunne-Cascio mentioned that the proposed revision from EPCC was discussed during University Council. It was mentioned that University Council has tabled voting on this matter until the students and administrative faculty have had an opportunity to discuss it. A discussion took place regarding EOUs shared governance. It was mentioned that ASEOU is aware of the proposed revisions and is in the process of setting up discussion venues for students.
