LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU) – Students perusing pages of the latest e-guidebook and website published by Colleges of Distinction will find just one public university in Oregon is listed: Eastern Oregon University.
What makes EOU a “College of Distinction?” Proven excellence in student engagement, quality teaching, its vibrant campus community and successful graduates.
“EOU is honored to be recognized for these qualities that go to the heart of our enterprise,” said Sarah Witte, interim provost. “Over the past decade, our faculty and staff have carried the standard of excellence through intentionally designed learning environments that emphasize and enhance student success.”
The national college guide uses the four distinctions defined above to identify a select group each year. EOU joins five of Oregon’s private colleges and universities on the 2014-15 list just released.
“First year experience programs, applied learning through internships, and independent or guided research with faculty in the field are but a few examples of how EOU has embedded ‘thinking and doing’ in the education environment to enhance and support the success of our students in the ladder of learning from high school through baccalaureate and graduate levels,” Witte added.
High school college counselors and educators nominate institutions for recognition. Colleges of Distinction evaluates each using qualitative and quantitative research, looking beyond rankings and test scores to find colleges that are the ideal places to learn, grow and succeed.
The selection process also reviews schools’ general education programs, experiential components of the curriculum, the strategic plan and alumni success and satisfaction.
“We focus on colleges that are deeply dedicated to students’ learning,” said Tyson Schritter, executive editor of Colleges of Distinction. “Schools designated as ‘Colleges of Distinction’ offer innovative learning experiences that educate, nurture and transform students.”
Colleges of Distinction provides dynamic college profiles and search tools for students, parents and counselors. The website includes tips from high school guidance counselors, essays from college students, presidents and other members of campus communities.
