LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU) – Michael O’Connor, Ph.D., will discuss changes in education policy due to standardization and accountability movements and Common Core Standards Thursday, Oct. 22 at Eastern Oregon University.

“Now More Than Ever: The Necessity of Service-Learning in Higher Education in the Age of the Common Core Standards” begins at 4 p.m. in Ackerman Hall, Room 210. A reception follows and live streaming is also available at livestream.com/eou/colloquium.

O’Connor is an associate professor of education and his presentation opens the colloquium series at EOU for fall term. His research paper discusses the profound changes in national K-12 educational policy occurring in the last 10 years as a result of the standardization and accountability movements, and especially the more recent changes brought about by the acceptance of the Common Core Standards by the vast majority of the states in the U.S.

Service-learning is described and explained with references to examples from the presenter’s own career experiences and research, and it is then discussed as a highly relevant pedagogical technique for exemplifying and teaching many of the intrinsic themes and aims inherent in the Common Core Standards.
