Congratulations Graduates 2021

The Student Diversity & Inclusion staff extend our deepest CONGRATULATIONS and best wishes to all our International & Multicultural graduates for this great achievement!  You have been exceptional leaders and have played an active role in promoting diversity and inclusion on campus through the various involvements you have been a part of — whether as a club member or leader, serving in a committee to plan a diversity event or the CEAD conference, mentoring a high school student or a new freshman through the Diversity Excellence Mentor program, presenting a cultural topic in a workshop/conference, volunteering in the community as well as the interactions you have had inside and outside of the classroom with your peers, faculty and staff.

Because of your leadership and involvement, you will leave EOU a better place than when you arrived. As you graduate and move forward towards a new adventure, we have two quotes to share with you –

“It is absolutely still possible to make a difference.” —Michelle Obama;

and

“Seek achievement not just for your own betterment but as an acknowledgment to those who sacrificed before you and those that will look at you for guidance”.

Thank you for your dedication and contributions to Eastern Oregon University.  Continue radiating your Mountaineer spirit wherever you are and we hope to see you back soon as alumni. CONGRATULATIONS!

“Iakwe! My name is Ann Abija hailing from Ailinglaplap and Namu atoll. I am currently attending my final term and last days at Eastern Oregon University (EOU) and the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) here in La Grande, Oregon. I am studying nursing as my major. One of the challenges I faced as a student was being away from my family and coming to this completely new and foreign place with unknown expectations to further my education. A message I want to share to my fellow students and friends who are pursuing their studies overseas and far away from our homeland, is that we should never give up! Yes, there are times we face financial difficulties, mental breakdown, and have experienced a hungry stomach among many other things but we should never give up! Thank you Mama & Baba & aunty Thersay & uncle Bob and a special shoutout to all my friends and especially my “gurls” — thank you all so much!! Stay well and be safe! “If God is with her she will not fall” -Plasm 46:5.”

Also would like to dedicate this achievement to the memory of my grandparents. I hope you’re both watching all the way up there and proud. Lastly but certainly not the least, I would like to thank PNSB for the continued financial support throughout this journey. I wouldn’t have made it this far if it wasn’t for your generous financial support. Once again, thank you and may God bless us all.”

I am very thankful to all my professors who provided me and helped me in starting and building a strong foundation for myself at Eastern Oregon University, EOU. EOU is my foundation, and I will continue to have future endeavors. My counselors, they have offered me the guidance and support I needed each step of the way. Everyone including EOU faculty, Student Services, staff, etc.…all supported and contributed to what I have achieved in graduating today. Everyone I met through EOU have all been helpful in some way in their services and for that, I am truly grateful. I am so happy, so excited, and so proud to be a graduate of Eastern Oregon University. If I was given a chance to choose again, I stand firm with EOU. There isn’t anywhere I would rather be than here. EOU instilled courage in me to be the person I am who sees the importance of serving the underserved people in a community and much more. Families, friends, and my best friends, thank you very much for your prayers, and unconditional love and support. In addition, I really appreciate my 692 Iakwe Club and the Marshallese community in La Grande. I am truly blessed! I would also like to acknowledge the father of my children, Anje Phillip, for his unending encouragement, love, and support. To my two handsome boys, KAMD and MD, mommy did it again! I do not think mommy could have done it without you two to motivate me to be the best I can be with much help and caring from your father. I love you guys from Ebon, Wotje, Lae, Enmat, Ebedon, Kwajalein, Kabinmeto, and back!”

“Dear mom & Dad
I feel so honored and blessed to have you as my parents, and want to express my gratitude for your care and support over the years. Thank you for instilling me with a strong passion for learning and for doing everything possible to put me on the path to greatness. I will never forget the important values you have passed down to me—particularly perseverance and honesty. Beating cancer and losing a parent during my senior hasn’t been the best but having the right support system made it east. Truly grateful for friends–now family for being the best support system. Words cannot describe how important you are to me. To the Computer Science faculties, thank you for your support and being accommodating during my difficult times. Thank you so much for everything that you’ve done to help me reach the peak of my profession. I am highly blessed to have such amazing mentors and grateful for all the skills you have instilled in me. To my friends A,D,R,E, Your contribution to my success does not go unnoticed. If not for your care and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. You have been pillars of support, guidance, and love in my life since the day I was born. I feel so good today, and words cannot express how much your guidance really means to me. I learned to live one day at the time; I also enjoy/appreciate the little things and I have stopped worrying about the future because life itself it’s so unpredictable.”

“In life, there is really nothing we have to lose, because we were born with nothing to begin with. Eventually one day, all of us will die. Everything that we’ve come to see as important, will lose significance on that day. What would you wish you could have done then? How would you rather have lived your life? Take that and start living true to that today. Don’t live your life in regret, because life is not meant to be lived in regret. It’s meant to be live in passion, with love, with fire, conviction, and purpose. Don’t ever settle for what you don’t want; keep fighting for what you believe in. To my biggest supporters in life, Mama and Papa, there are no better words to use today than “thank you”. I may be the first person in our family to graduate from college, but this degree is partly yours as well: It would never have been possible without your support and guidance. I could not have done it without you. Your contribution to my success does not go unnoticed. If not for your care and support, I would not be standing among the graduates today. I am truly blessed to have such amazing parents and grateful for all the love you have instilled in me. You are one in a million! A special dedication and “thank you” to one of my closest friends, Roselyn Tartios, for your never ending love and support throughout my academic journey. Thank you for always stepping in to help me whenever life would throw its challenges at me . I am forever indebted to you . To my EOU faculty, staff and admin, Komooltata for being a life-changer, future maker, and a mind shaper. My life has changed because of all the lessons you have given me. I appreciate you all!!
