{"id":2457,"date":"2024-11-07T17:54:18","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T17:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/foundation\/?p=2457"},"modified":"2024-11-08T20:30:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T20:30:01","slug":"philanthropy-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/foundation\/2024\/11\/07\/philanthropy-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Philanthropy for Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For Fred and Phyllis Arnst and their family, Eastern Oregon University is a cherished and &nbsp; longstanding part of their story.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/mountaineer-magazine\/files\/2024\/11\/lr-2024.03.25-Fred-and-Phyllis-Arnst-720_e-MKD_1456-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2612\" width=\"472\" height=\"314\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Phyllis and Fred Arnst<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a long, lovely list of the ways EOU has impacted our life and our family,\u201d Phyllis Arnst said. \u201cOur journey started in Eastern Oregon in 1968 in Wallowa County and then to La Grande. The journey has been as beautiful as this region itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple met at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. Their relationship blossomed, leading to marriage and a move to Winifred, Montana where Fred took on roles as a head coach and PE teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI was taking summer classes at the University of Montana and met the superintendent for Wallowa County who told me about an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;After six wonderful years in Wallowa County, a new opportunity arose in La Grande.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot long after we moved to La Grande, I found a position with Eastern\u2013I worked for three presidents, and three name changes,\u201d Phyllis said. \u201cI started working for a state college and retired from a university!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many of our children and grandchildren have attended Eastern and earned degrees here,\u201d Phyllis continued. \u201cBecause of our backgrounds and interests, it got us thinking about the type of students we want to support. We\u2019re interested in supporting students who can use help, so we wanted to make sure our scholarship is renewable,\u201d Phyllis commented.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was important to us to establish rapport with students. Providing renewable scholarships makes the students feel good, knowing there are people out there who want to support their journey and help them succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a big deal,\u201d Fred said. \u201cIt\u2019s just one of the ways we can help students get through school\u2013to be successful now, but also helping students succeed in life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEOU does a good job helping students see the importance of philanthropy in their own lives and communities,\u201d Phyllis reflected. \u201cIn our retirement years, we look back and see all of the benefits from our educational opportunities. We want to pay it forward, so students can have fulfilling and productive lives.
