{"id":49,"date":"2024-12-11T10:11:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T18:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/financial-aid\/?page_id=49"},"modified":"2024-12-11T10:11:03","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T18:11:03","slug":"constitution-day","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/financial-aid\/review-award\/federal-aid-and-policies\/constitution-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Constitution Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"lead\">September 17 is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day (Constitution Day).&nbsp; This day commemorates the September 17, 1787 signing of the United States Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written in 1787, ratified in 1788, and in operation since 1789, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.senate.gov\/civics\/constitution_item\/constitution.htm\" target=\"_blank\">United States Constitution<\/a> is the world\u2019s longest surviving written charter of government. Its first three words \u2013\u2013 \u201cWe the People\u201d \u2013\u2013 affirm that the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens. For over two centuries, the Constitution has remained in force because its framers wisely separated and balanced governmental powers to safeguard the interests of majority rule and minority rights, of liberty and equality, and of the federal and state governments. Since 1789, the Constitution has evolved through amendments to meet the changing needs of a nation now profoundly different from the eighteenth-century world in which its creators lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To encourage all Americans to learn more about the Constitution, Congress established in 1956, Constitution Week, to begin each year on September 17th, the date in 1787 when delegates to the Convention signed the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">America\u2019s Founding Documents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the National Archives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/founding-docs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a> for the U.S. Constitution:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>These three documents, known collectively as the Charters of Freedom, have secured the rights of the American people for more than two and a quarter centuries and are
