{"id":76,"date":"2012-08-07T16:14:09","date_gmt":"2012-08-07T23:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/staging-disability\/?page_id=76"},"modified":"2026-06-23T09:52:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T16:52:19","slug":"resources-for-faculty","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/disability\/resources-for-faculty\/","title":{"rendered":"Resources for Faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faculty Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campus compliance with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ada.gov\/\">ADA<\/a> is a shared responsibility, and faculty members play an important role in an institution&#8217;s efforts to provide equal access to participate in postsecondary education without discrimination.&nbsp; For faculty members, providing reasonable accommodations or auxiliary aids and services is one way to prevent discrimination.&nbsp; The Disability Service Office (DSO) staff consults with faculty members about the best way to meet a student\u2019s academic accommodations in a particular course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Providing equal access to disabled students is a collaborative effort in which the faculty member has the following responsibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Respecting students\u2019 right to privacy by maintaining confidentiality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remaining discreet by never discussing student\u2019s disability or need for accommodations in front of other students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meeting with students to discuss their learning needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working with the DSO staff in providing accommodations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementing the accommodations as outlined by the DSO<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confidentiality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A student may choose to tell you about their disability, but you cannot request the information from the student.&nbsp; Please keep in mind that students with invisible disabilities may hesitate to identify themselves early in the term for fear of being challenged about their disability needs.&nbsp; Access to the confidential documentation and all accommodations must come through the DSO, as per the ADA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accommodations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accommodations are alterations or services which allow the student to participate on an equal basis with peers in class.&nbsp; Accommodations are not intended to require you to compromise academic standards when evaluating academic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Testing Accommodations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For your students who qualify for a testing accommodation, you will receive an e-mail stating the specific conditions of the accommodation. If your student wants to use their alternative testing arrangements, the student is encouraged to schedule their exam in the Testing Center approximately three days before the testing date.
