WHAT IS A CONFAB?
Confab derives from the term confabulation. Which means Informal, n. A causal talk. The SLC is bite-sized and interactive conversations about leadership. Comfy spots to relax. Laughter. Inspiration waiting to serve us all. We’re talking old-school conversations. Cafe-style seating. some nosh and music. Join other students on campus as we get together, get real and talk.
The Confab is a student-run annual opportunity that serves as the cornerstone of leadership experience and training for college students across the EOU campus. Each year, students come together to talk about leadership and learn about service, social justice, and more! The Confab offers students a change to learn, understand, participate in, engage in, and reflect on skills and knowledge that can be applicable in student organizations, campuses, job settings, families and their communities.
Each year, the Confab has a keynote speaker focused on the designated theme for the year.
HISTORY OF THE EOU CONFAB
The Confab was originally initiated as a Student Leadership Conference in 2008 and designated to allow students the opportunity to participate in an inclusive environment that enhances personal and professional growth, encourages greater multicultural competence, while also sharpening their leadership skills and building confidence needed to become strong leaders. After completion of the 5th conference in 2012, the student committee took a different approach and modeled their confab after a student affairs professional confab at Boise State University. Now, the Confab helps put the topics back in the hands of the students as they discuss topics important to EOU every year.
In 2011 & 2012, additional speakers were invited to speak as a kickoff to the Student Leadership Conference included Mike Manning (MTV’s Real World D.C. & Disney’s Original Movie “Cloud 9″) and Steve Wallace (former San Francisco 49er). In 2013, the committee transitioned the speaker to be incorporated in the Confab itself, as the speaker engages with students with a keynote at the beginning of the day, joins in discussion throughout the morning and wraps up the Confab with reflection. Previous speakers include: Kristen Hadeed, Tyson Wooters, Jess Ekstrom, The Dream Share Project and Harlan Cohen.
