{"id":1184,"date":"2013-12-18T00:20:10","date_gmt":"2013-12-18T00:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/art\/?p=1184"},"modified":"2013-12-18T00:20:10","modified_gmt":"2013-12-18T00:20:10","slug":"artist-creates-immersive-environment-for-gallery-visitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/art\/news\/artist-creates-immersive-environment-for-gallery-visitors\/","title":{"rendered":"Artist creates immersive environment for gallery visitors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Expect to become immersed in \u201cFlow Chart: Diffusion,\u201d a new installation enveloping Eastern Oregon University\u2019s Nightingale Gallery this January.<\/p>\n<p>This distinctive solo exhibition by <a href=\"http:\/\/joe-page.com\/joe-page.com\/Home.html\">Joe Page<\/a>, of Northbrook, Ill., ushers in 2014 at the gallery in Loso Hall. An opening reception coincides with La Grande\u2019s Art Walk from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10.<\/p>\n<p>Page will also give a free, public talk about his work at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8 in Huber Auditorium in Badgley Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Cory Peeke, Nightingale Gallery director, describes the vibrant colors, reductive imagery and illustrated movements within the \u201cFlow Chart\u201d series as deceptively simple, derivative of early video games, pinball machines, mass transit maps and schematic diagrams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe escapist allure of immersive environments drives Page\u2019s work, orienting the viewer in a place of comfort and curiosity,\u201d Peeke explains. \u201cThe materials in the installation and the imagery conjured with them are somewhat of a paradoxical anachronism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peeke adds that the creative process is entirely analog and object-based, but the finished work requires a particular knowledge of digital culture on the part of the viewer.<\/p>\n<p>Page received his master of fine arts from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He has been a visiting assistant professor of art at Whitman College since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>See the installation at EOU through Jan. 31.
