(EOU)<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0\u201dI\u2019m a collage-maker for much the same reason I\u2019m a curator \u2013 I love images,\u201d says Cory Peeke, associate professor of art and director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eou.edu\/art\/nightingale-gallery\/\">Nightingale Gallery<\/a> at Eastern Oregon University.<\/p>\n<p>Peeke\u2019s collages\u00a0go on display at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitman.edu\/sheehan\/index.html\">Sheehan Gallery<\/a>\u00a0at Whitman College, Feb. 22-Apr. 12. He\u2019ll\u00a0also\u00a0give an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. Mar. 29 in Olin Hall, Room 130 at Whitman.<\/p>\n<p>This upcoming show follows Peeke\u2019s recent guest appearance at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/saranacartprojects.wordpress.com\/\">Saranac Art Projects<\/a>\u2018 exhibition in Spokane and the debut of the winter issue of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/issuu.com\/gamblingtheaisle\/docs\/winterr_2012?mode=window&amp;printButtonEnabled=false\">Gambling the Aisle<\/a>, featuring his artwork on the cover and an in-depth interview on page 16.<\/p>\n<p>Peeke often creates his collages utilizing discarded black and white images as a focal point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe largely ignored and\u00a0seemingly inconsequential bits of ephemera that once had a purpose, still have\u00a0a presence, but now idle in disuse. I combine, layer, juxtapose, glue, tape and\u00a0re-contextualize these bits and pieces of detritus in order to reincarnate and\u00a0recharge them,\u201d the artist says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the process of collage, these snippets of the past\u00a0combine to become at once something fresh and familiar. They both exemplify\u00a0and explore the duality that is the transient, disposable nature of our culture, as\u00a0well as the necessity to create tradition and solidify a cultural continuity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his studio practice and duties as gallery director, Peeke teaches art and art history at EOU and is a contributing writer for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kolajmagazine.com\/content\/\">Kolaj Magazine<\/a>. He\u00a0is represented by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.galleryima.com\/index.html\">Gallery IMA<\/a>\u00a0in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>Peeke received his bachelor of fine arts from Kendall College of Art and Design and a master of fine arts from the University of Idaho.
