Is your online catalog for Pierce LIbrary - your access to books, journals and more. Here are some search strategies, tips, and examples for music:

Author/composer search - find books by a known author or composer. Example: Do an author search on "Bernstein, Leonard" for his writings and compositions. Do a subject heading search for music about "Bernstein, Leonard". For common composers and titles (such as Preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach) try combination author/title searches.

Keyword searches are the broadest searches. You may search on terms relating to authors, titles, genres, performers and more. For example, if you wish to find musical compositions for a certain instrument or ensemble you can search the instrument names: For example "flute and piano" or "string quartet".

Title - Use title search for book title and journal title for journal titles (not article titles). Also use title search for titles of musical compositions. Remember to try alternate titles and foreign language titles. You may include sonata numbers and opus numbers but try variations (Opus, op. number, no., etc.) or numbers only.

Music Subject Headings

Subject headings are the words or phrases used by the Library of Congress to describe the main topic of books and/or articles. The phrases listed below are examples.

•  Chamber music

•  Computer music

•   Popular music

•   Women composers

•  Jazz Songs

•   Music--History and criticism

For additional subject headings, consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings listed in the four large red volumes located in the Pierce Library Reading Room on top of the bookshelf as you enter or ask the Reference Librarian.

After doing a subject search in the OPAC, you can conduct an advanced search and limit:

• Summit
  Summit is the online catalog (books, journals and more) for Oregon and Washington’s universities and colleges in the Orbis-Cascade Alliance. Faculty, students and staff at EOU can use Inter-Library loan to request items from this catalog. When you are looking for a title in our OPAC and it is not there, click on the Summit button to check for holdings in the member libraries. For search assistance, use the help option, or contact the reference librarian.

  Access to library catalogs world-wide (music scores, articles, dissertations, books, recordings, videos, and more). WorldCat is an excellent place to go for those hard-to-locate items that can be sent to Pierce through Inter-Library Loan.

How to find Music Articles, Scholarly Articles, and Performance Reviews

First, use a database to find articles or your topic.There are some special databases for music listed below. Some articles you find will be full-text, and some will have to be secured through Inter-Library Loan. Leave yourself plenty of time ahead of any paper’s due date! Academic Search Premier Large database of scholarly and popular journals covering variety of academic subjects; includes full-text journals back to 1985, abstracts back to 1984, peer-reviewed articles and some newspapers.

Arts and Humanities Search Over 2.5 million records from 1,300 sources from 1980 providing indexes on articles, bibliographies, editorials, letters and reviews on the world?s leading arts and humanities journals. Includes selected articles from social science and science journals.

Book Review Digest Cites and excerpts reviews from periodicals published in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain. Includes only reviews that have appeared within 18 months of book publication. Ebsco Multi-Database Search:
