Catalog Description: Advanced study of the British canon. Prerequisites: ENGL 206 or 207, one British or American survey course, upper-division standing.

Required Texts available through the EOU Bookstore: Longman Anthology of British Literature Second Compact Edition volumes A and B (packaged together), one self-selected longer work, and access to handbook with MLA citation information Learning Outcomes (Upon completion of this course, students will be able to...):
  1. Define and problematize "canon,"
  2. Demonstrate a general understanding of British literary history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century,
  3. Read canonical British literature critically as part of its socio-historical context,
  4. Discuss and present topics in British canonical literature,
  5. Perform scholarly research, and
  6. Write effectively as a means of discovery and of sharing critical and creative responses.
Means of Assessment and Grading: A 92-100, A- 90-91, B+ 88-89, B 82-87, B- 80-81, C+ 78-79, C 72-77, C- 70-71, D+ 68-69, D 62-67, D- 60-61, F 59 and below
