OVERVIEW Theron "Thorny" and Dorothy Hampton have operated the grocery store in Richland, Oregon for over thirty years. Richland is located near the Brownlee Reservoir, a 15,000 acre containment behind Brownlee Dam on the Snake River. The water course here is remote however, Richland, is close. Access to one of the few boat launches in the area is just a short distance from town. Boaters can access the reservoir by going downstream in the Powder River from Hewitt and Holcomb. The Oregon Department of Fish and Game acknowledges Brownlee Reservoir as one of the warm water fishing hot spots for Crappie fishing, not only in the state of Oregon, but in the entire country. Pomoxis nigromaculatus black crappie and p. annularis, the white crappie are both found in this reservoir. Thorny Hampton is credited with starting the Brownlee Crappie Tournament here six years ago. It draws participants from around the country and provides an important economic stimulus for the community of about 600 people. In fact, the economy of this community, situated in the upland reaches of Baker County, in the foothills of the Wallowas and on the banks of the Powder River is highly dependent on the Crappie. So dependent that when water levels in the reservoirs fluctuate, so to do the dollars flowing through town. In this podcast Theron Hampton, talks about the Crappie fisheries and what it means to Richland. He also discusses how flood control decisions on the Snake River, impact the trickle down economics of a community, linked to the outside world by the livelihood of this little warm water fish. |
