BODY COMPOSITION (Wrestling) STUDY AT OSU
My name is Kristen Oja and I am a doctoral student who will be conducting a research study at Oregon State University (OSU) during the spring of 2006. I am writing to high school athletes, who live within a one-hour drive of OSU, to invite them to participate in a research study. The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) began a new program called the Oregon (Wrestling) Weight Monitoring Program during the current (2005-2006) high school wrestling season. This new program was developed with the intention of making wrestling a healthier sport for it’s athletes, and it relies on assessing percent body fat with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in order to establish a wrestler’s minimum wrestling weight. The BOD POD was also used (at OSU) to measure percent body fat if a wrestler chose to appeal his/her initial minimum wrestling weight.
The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the body composition (percent body fat) and minimum weight determination procedures implemented in the OSAA Oregon Wrestling Weight Monitoring Program.
Testing will be at OSU in the Women’s Building, Room 19 (Human Performance Laboratory). The Women's Building is denoted by a "WB" on the OSU Campus Map. If you participate in this study, you will benefit in the following ways:
- You will gain personal information about your body composition that is both relevant to your health and to your sport.
- You will be provided with the group results of this study, if requested.
- The results of this study and my recommendations (that are based on the study results) will be made available to the OSAA. The OSAA may then use this data to evaluate or to make modifications to the Oregon Wrestling Weight Monitoring Program.
- The study results, conclusions, and my recommendations will be shared with other researchers and the wrestling community. This information may be useful to other states and organizations that have (or have not yet) developed wrestling weight monitoring programs.
If you choose to participate in this study, all of your personal information will remain anonymous. If you participate, you will be responsible for the cost of transportation to and from OSU, however you will park for free at OSU. You will not be paid for your participation in this study. Please read (and sign) the Informed Consent Form, available at http://www.eou.edu/~koja/, (link is at top of page), which must be signed by a parent or legal guardian if you are a under the age of 18 years. Please keep a record of the signed Informed Consent Form (for your records), and bring a signed Informed Consent Form to OSU on the day of testing. In addition, you will find basic instructions to follow one week prior to testing at (link at top of page) http://www.eou.edu/~koja.
Important Information about the Informed Consent Form: Be sure to print and sign two Informed Consent Forms after reading the form. Keep one Informed Consent form for your records and bring an Informed Consent Form to OSU (Corvallis, Oregon) when you arrive for testing. If you are under the age of 18 years, you must have a parent (or legal guardian) sign both Informed Consent forms. Data will not be collected until the research technician (Oja) has received the signed Informed Consent Form that you read and signed.
