Field Trips

10, 12 April: Spotted Frog Egg Survey, Ladd Marsh
Students will attend one field trip on either Monday or Wednesday, during the scheduled lab time from 2:00-4:50 PM. We will be walking around several ponds looking for egg masses. It may be cold, wet and muddy, so bring warm clothing, water, sun block, a hat and rubber boots or waders, if you have them. You may also want to bring binoculars and a camera.

8, 10 May: Longley Meadow
Students will attend one field trip on either Monday or Wednesday. We will leave at 12:00 noon and return by 5:00 PM. We will be sampling aquatic macroinvertebrates in the stream channel, so students should be prepared to get wet feet on this trip.

15, 17 May: Ladd Marsh wetlands ecology

Students will attend one five-hour afternoon trip to Ladd Marsh. We will discuss wetlands vegetation, view spring wild flowers, learn plant sampling techniques for determining jurisdictional wetlands, and view and discuss riparian ecosystem qualities.

22 May: Pumpkin Ridge
This will be an all-day trip to the GROWISER preserve on Pumpkin Ridge. We will be hiking and students should bring gear for being outdoors all day in whatever weather prevails. Lunch will be provided. Bring sturdy footwear and water.

24 May: Spring Symposium

When the schedule is available, I will let you know what sessions you are required to attend.

31 May: Rebarrow Research Forest

Since Monday is a holiday this week, everyone will need to attend this trip on Wednesday. We will leave at 12:00 noon and return by 5:00 PM. Students will provide their own transportation for this trip. We will meet in the parking lot west of Badgley Hall at 12:00 PM and caravan up to the forest, located 6 miles south of La Grande on Glass Hill Road. The Rebarrow Research Forest is a community reforestation project in the Blue Mountains above La Grande. After an introductory tour and discussion of eastside forest ecology, students will assist with woody vegetation sampling on the hectare grid research area. Students will need sturdy outdoor shoes.
