The 11th edition is the newest version but the 9th or 10th will be fine also. Pick one. If you buy a used text, be sure the book on CD is included with the book.
- NOTE THAT YOUR CHOICE OF THE FOLLOWING TEXT WILL DEPEND ON THE VERSION OF OFFICE YOU WILL BE USING. YOU MAY USE OFFICE 2000, OFFICE XP, OFFICE 2003, OR OFFICE 2007. PICK ONE.

This book is available at the EOU bookstore or you should be able to pick one up on the internet or at Amazon.com. Any of the 'Advanced' texts should work-there are three--all the same but with different bindings.
- Meetings: This course is a distance course and no class meetings will be scheduled.
- Equipment and software: The course will use text materials and software designed for PCs with the Windows 98 (at least) operating system and a CD-ROM drive. The text includes CD-ROM based supporting materials and it assumes a Windows PC as the machine in use. Distance students will also need a modem for communication or be connected to a network. You will use Office XP, 2003, or 2007 in the course. Earlier versions will also work--but the procedures may not precisely match the software tutorials.
- Labs- Pierce Library Lab, Learning Center Lab-Loso Hall, Business Lab-Zabel Hall, Ackerman Lab. These labs are available for distance students withing communting distance of the campus. For far off campus students, you will use your own equipment and software.

About the course: This course is designed to introduce the student to the advanced use of business software and also give them an intermediate understanding of hardware concepts. We will be using Microsoft Office as the software in the course. Students should expect to be very skilled in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software use and design by the end of the course. Students should expect to spend the great majority of their time at a computer working on software tutorials. The only way to really learn software is to use it.
The Parsons/Oja text includes a CD-ROM that contains the book itself (yes, the entire book!!!) and also includes web connections, quicktime movies, and labs that contribute greatly to the understanding of the material in the text. The text material is designed to be read and interacted with on a computer. One can, of course, read the text in a traditional manner--but students should make use of the interactive components on the CD. It is the shape of things to come in interactive education. You bought it so you might as well make use of your investment. The publisher also supports a website -- The NP9 or NP10 or NP 11 website-- that is available for students. No assignments in the class are based in the website at this time. Feel free to check it out however. It does provide additional labs and access to the same practice tests that are on the CD if you have problems with your CD.
The course will be structured in a relatively self-paced format. Students will work at their own pace, completing the course requirements as soon or as late as they choose within the timeframe of the class. (Experience has shown the value of starting early however!!)
E-mail and Internet use. All materials for the course will be posted on the campus internet server. Students entering the class should have basic Internet and computing skills in Office (including skills in powerpoint, word, access, and excel). E-mail will serve as a primary form of communication between class members.
The Portfolio: Each student will compile a portfolio of projects from the course texts. The following should be included in the portfolio:
- A title page that indicates the student's name, the course and quarter, the version of Office used, and their level of attainment in the Shelley & Cashman exercises.
- Shelley and Cashman. All printed output generated by the exercises from the Shelley and Cashman text-only that that is REQUIRED by the exercises (whenever it says PRINT)-and a printing of your final output-- will be included in your portfolio.
- Shelley and Cashman. Any data files created will be saved on a CD or a memory stick (or a set of data disks) provided by the student and will also be included in the portfolio. You can use one writable CD for storage of all your data if desired. A memory stick will also work for file storage but I cannot guarantee return of the stick. Data files will generally have the name indicated in the exercise--do not create your own names!. If the exercise does not indicate a name for the saved file (the cases), then use the name noted on the software assignment list below.
- Parsons/Oja. You should first study the 'Orientation' section of the Parsons/Oja text at the beginning of the text. It will explain how to use the materials that support the printed text. You will be responsible for chapters 7 to 12 in the Parsons/Oja text. Each chapter of the Parsons/Oja text contains a set of quickchecks that will be done and saved in your tracking file-stored on a floppy disk or on your hard drive. If you put your tracking file on your hard drive, you will need to copy the file to your file CD when you are done with the Parsons/Oja work. At the end of each chapter is an "interactive practice test" that will be will be taken and passed at a minimum of the 70% level. Look at the detailed table of contents of the book if you have trouble finding the practice tests. The test will be printed for inclusion in the portfolio. To print, you will need to 'check your answers' and the study page that results can be printed. If you don't get a 70% or better the first time--take the exam again until you do! You may take the exams as many times as you wish. The 70% level is a minimum--pass at a higher level for more points.
- Reward Points!--Parsons/Oja. YFI will assign a maximum of 12 points for the effort of the student on chapter activities in the Parsons/Oja text as reflected on the tracking report and on the production quality of the portfolio. These points will be included in the Parsons/Oja activities.
- More Parsons/Oja.You will also be doing all the New Perspectives interactive labs in the assigned chapters (7-12). These labs include short interactive quizs during and at the end of the lab. Higher scores will receive more credit--but there is no minimum acceptable score. These scores will be saved to your tracking disk. You are not required to do all the 'exploration' that is possible with the lab--only the base lab (lab assignment number 1) is required. Again, lab quiz scores will be saved in your tracking file. Do ONLY the interactive portion of the labs--DO NOT do the additional lab assignments listed in the printed portion of the text beyond assignment 1. The New Perspective Labs are listed in the table of contents within the chapter contents--check them out there to make sure you do not miss one
- Tracking Disk-Parsons/Oja You should go to the 'Book on CD' portion of the 'Oreintation' section at the front of the text for instruction on how to use the tracking file. The Tracking report used to record your activities in the Parsons/Oja CD will be included in the portfolio as a printed copy of the tracking report. Go to the 'file' pull down menu ('tools' on earlier editions) to view your tracking report--on the tracking report screen is a print button--use it to print. You will also include your tracking file in your portfolio--either on a floppy disk--Label the disk as a tracking disk with your name and the class-or If you choose to use your file CD as your storage medium for your tracking file and you stored your file on your hard drive, you will need to use Windows Explorer to copy your file from your hard disk to your file CD or go to the 'files' menu and "move" your tracking file to your CD. memory stick, or floppy.
- A three ring binder works well for packaging the materials.
A set of data files will be required for some of the exercises from the Shelley and Cashman texts. Students with their own equipment will download these files as per instructions on the back cover of the Shelley & Cashman text. These work fairly well for most students. We will require Excel, Word, and Powerpoint files that correspond to your shelley and cashman text--have the ISBN handy. If you have bunches of trouble downloading, request a copy of the file disks from your your friendly instructor.
The portfolio will be mailed in to your friendly instructor so that he will receive your portfolio 5:00 PM of the friday before final week. Check the academic calendar on the EOU website for this date. All materials in the portfolio will be placed in exercise order, labeled with the exercise number, and professional in appearance including a title page with the student's name, the class, and the performance level the student chose.
Grading: Grades will be based on performance on two sets of requirements: a 100 point portfolio based on the assigned chapter quickchecks, practice tests, and interactive New Perspectives labs from the Parsons/Oja text; and completion of a set of projects/assignments worth a possible 200 points in the Shelly and Cashman text. The course is outcome based and the student will choose the level of performance they wish to attain in both the Parsons/Oja materials and the Shelley and Cashman tutorials--and which grade they choose to work toward. Scores for the Parson/Oja section of the portfolio will be based on a combination of effort and attainment--in the eyes of your friendly instructor--Make sure you print your final tracking report and include it in your portfolio. Final grades will be based on 90%-80%-70% of the 300 possible points in the course. See the "Grading Sheet' link at the end of the syllabus for a complete list of the software requirements.
Testing. Testing will consist of the chapter exams from the Parsons/Oja text as noted above.
