1. Uses a descriptive and attention-getting title. (1 point)

2. Provides a strong introduction that meets all criteria for an introductory paragraph. (3 points)

3. Style: (4 points)

__Uses sources to support your ideas and claims, not the other way around.

__Demonstrates original thought and insightful analysis, lesser evaluations tend not to present original ideas.

__Creates a "dialogue" between the student’s ideas and sources, and also among the sources themselves. Lesser evaluations will often summarize one point at a time, with the essay author's idea stated at the end.

__Addresses audience in an appropriate manner. Establishes credibility on the subject and provides sufficient information to make the argument (thesis) convincing.

4. Organizes paper logically: (7 points)

__ States thesis that reflects the focus of selected theme clearly.

__Uses topic sentences and connects topic sentences to thesis as explicitly as possible.

__Provides appropriate transitions both within and between paragraphs.

6. Writing Technique: (3 points)
__ Demonstrates coherent writing, good transitions, good grammar, spelling and selects words precisely.

__Makes sure sentences are clear and unambiguous. Sentences are adequately varied in length and style, without fragments or run-ons.

__Shows evidence of a careful proofread to identify and correct mechanical errors, such as errors in plurals or possessives, comma errors, spelling errors, subject-verb agreement, shifts in verb tense or person--uses first person only when it advances the argument.

7. Citation: (2 points)

__Uses APA parenthetical citations correctly.

__Works Cited list is correct according to APA style, and includes all sources cited in the paper.

8. Paper is formatted correctly. (2 points)
__You should submit a 5-8 page, typed, double-spaced paper, with 12-point font type size and 1 inch margins.

__Citations should be in-text citations (APA format).

__You should have a title page, and a bibliography or reference page.

__Number your pages.
