Tutor Observations and Reflections Guide for Online Students

One of the most effective ways to prepare to work as a writing tutor is to observe experienced tutors in the process of tutoring. Most students, after observing tutoring in the Writing Lab, gain the confidence that they can, indeed, see themselves as writing tutors. Some of the most important learning in the course happens in these observations.

Online students will observe online tutors responses for their Tutor Observations.

Go to OWL Training menu page for the OWL Model Drafts and Responses and other pertinent links for this Study Guide Assignment.

You will compose three Tutor Observations and Reflections for Model Drafts and Responses #1-3.

Students will write a minumum one-page observation and reflection. In your response to each OWL tutorial session, consider the following questions:

* What insights into tutoring or the writing process did you gain?

* What connections did you make to the readings? How did theory translate to practice?

* How did the OWL tutor transfer the "Best Practices Checklist" for on-campus tutoring to online tutoring?

* What do you observe tutors should do and not do in tutoring sessions and why?

* How do you think your strengths and weaknesses will affect your own tutoring?

* What questions or concerns about tutoring do you have after the session?

In your submission, at the top of each observation, use the following heading:

Your Name
Tutor Observation #:
Student Writer's name:

Please submit all 3 observations together to the Digital Drop Box.
