Essay #2:

Analysis of Student Essay

WR 220 Essay #2: Explanatory Essay on Working with a Student Paper

Reread Daniel's essay on Euthanasia in Clark, pp. 116-118.

Your task:

In an essay, describe how and why you would respond to this essay, citing from course readings--Clark, Chapters 1-6 and St. Martins.

I want you to show that you can make connections between theory and practice, and between the readings(Chapters 1-6 and essays we have read in St. Martins) and this essay. Remember that your audience is one who has not read the course texts.

Make the connections clear by citing your sources, using MLA documentation style. Review Study Guides 1-6 to remind yourself what we have covered.

Note about Audience:

Assume you are writing for a "clueless reader" who is not familiar with the readings and has only glanced at Daniel's paper. You will need to not only say what you would do but why, quoting and paraphrasing the paper and the sources.

IMPORTANT:  Do not just provide an outline of what you would do that would apply to any paper.  Direct your response to this specific paper and its specific strengths and weaknesses.  Make your comments specific to this paper.

Note about Purpose:

The purpose of this essay is to

1) show to your professor your knowledge of the theory and strategies we have been reading about and discussing as apply to this student essay.

2) inform a general audience interested in learning to tutor about how a tutor might respond to this essay, explaining the theory behind the choices, and using sources to explain, support, and illustrate your points.

3) show that you can cite sources as "back-up singers," balancing paraphrase and quotation, using the MLA documentation style.
