Week 1

Learning about Writing Center History
& Theories of Writing and Learning

Clark, Chap.4 pp. 85-91 "Encourage Students to Do Something Before They Attempt to Write"

"St. Martin's, Introduction to text, Part I, "The Tutoring Process"

Lunsford in St. Martin's, "Collaboration, Control, and the Idea of a Writing Center"
(If you don't have a copy of our texts for Week 1 because you had to order them from the bookstore, I have copies of Week 1 readings available in a slot on my door for you to read in the Learning Center/Writing Lab.  Please do not take the copies from the Center unless you just take them to the Library to make copies and then return them.)

Assignments:

Mon. Introduction to Course; "Myths and Truths About Writing"

Wed. Bring printed copy of this Course Outline, Study Guide #1, Essay #1 to to class. In Clark, read pp. 1-18.

In class:

I will explain the Lunsford essay on Writing Center history.

We will do Study Guide Questions 1-4 together in class.

We will discuss and Practice Invention Strategies.

We will begin Essay #1: Discourse Community.  See Discourse Community Rubric.

Fri. Study Guide #1 due in box on my office door by 3 p.m.

Week 2

Reflecting on Our Own Writing History & Process

Week 3

Preparing to Work with Students

Readings:

Clark ,Chap. 3 "Working with Students: Interpersonal Communication"
St. Martin's, Brooks, "Minimalist Tutoring"

St. Martin's, Sherwood, "Censoring Students, Censoring Ourselves"

St. Martin's, Freed, "Subjectivity in the Tutorial Session: How Far Can We Go?"

Take VARK and Personality Inventories. Reflection due next week.

Assignments:

Mon. Study Guide #3 due; Peer Response Group Video "Student Writing Groups"

Wed. Reader-friendly draft of Essay #1 due for Peer Response Groups and a copy submitted to instructor. For Peer Response Groups, always bring 3 copies of a draft.

I do not respond to this early draft, but only record that you have partcipated in the process and to give you the credit. I wait to respond to the revised draft due Week 4 that has benefitted from peer response, tutor response, and is the product of multiple drafts and revision.

Also, schedule a session with a writing tutor to get feedback on your draft. Be sure to ask the tutor to complete a "Blue Slip" (what we call the Tutorial Report form).

Week 4

Helping Students to Get Started

Readings:
Clark, Chap. 4 pp. 65-83, "Interpreting Assignments, Developing Ideas"

St. Martin's, Shamoon and Burns, "A Critique of Pure Tutoring"

Assignments:

Mon. " How I Learn (VARK) and Personality Inventory " Reflection due. Bring hard copy of results to class as well.

Also, Study Guide #4 and Peer Response Reflection due.

Wed. Revised Writer's Autobiography due with drafts; also staple to the back your Being Tutored Reflection with Blue Slip (Tutorial Response Form).

Note: Your final revision of your Writer's Autobiography for evaluation will be due one week from the day that I return it to you with suggestions for revision. I will use the OWL format for responding in order to model for you how to respond online. Submit your revision with all of your drafts stapled behind, including my response. When you do revise based on my comments, be sure to submit the draft with my comments (stapled behind your revision).

Week 5
