Study Guide # 10: Tutoring in Cyberspace

OWL Response Training and Practice

Readings:

Clark, Chap. 10  “Tutoring in Cyberspace”
St. Martin's, Cooper, Bui, and Riker, "Protocols and Process in Online Tutoring"

READ ME: OWL Training Materials. By this I mean read through all of the material on this menu to prepare to complete SG #10.

1)  First, go to OWL "Submit a Draft Online" link that you will find on the OWL homepage.  Read through the form that online students must complete to submit an online draft.

Answer this question:  Why does this form ask these specific questions?  For example, what theories and best practices that you have studied for face-to-face tutoring get played out in the online form?

2)  Now read through the Online Writing Tutor Handbook on the Tutor Corner menu on the OWL (find it in the link above--OWL Training Materials).

Pay close attention to the "Responding to Draft" section.  Especially note the format for responding that all OWL tutors must use.

Answer this question:  Why is it better to divide the comments into Global vs Local in a letter form separate from the student's draft rather than just insert comments into brackets within the student's draft?

3)  Read the OWL Models 1-3 that you will find in the OWL Training Materials link.

Answer this question:  Which response do you think is the strongest and why?  The weakest and why?

4)  Read the Writing Tutor Best Practices Checklist (find in the OWL Training menu).  This is a tutor created list and is a work-in-progress.

Now with all that you have read thus far in mind, try to respond just as an OWL tutor would to Practice #1.

Your task: Respond to Practice Draft #1 (not Model Draft #1) that you will find on the OWL Training page.  Use the format as described in the handbook and also used in two of the Models. Bring this practice OWL Response to class with you on Monday of Week 10.

Just do your best! Bring your Practice response to class to discuss.

5) Print out Practice Draft #2 and #3 to bring to class for us to do together in class. You do not have to respond to these as homework.  Just bring the practice drafts to class.

Online Students will submit their practice responses within Study
Guide 10.

We will addresss Practices #2 and #3 in Discussion Board.

Online Students--Also, Post your OWL Practice for "Reality TV" Essay to Discussion Board.  Give each other feedback (remembering to praise!).

On-Campus Students will bring a copy of their practice responses to Practice #1 to class along with copies of Practice essays #2 and #3 (not responses, just the student essays) and we will do the practice reponses in class for #2 and #3.
