BARBIE CULTURE SOC. 405 READING & CONFERENCE CLASS

A one-credit "weekend college" style course on May 7 & 8, 2004.  Planned to coincide with the “Rethinking Barbie Contest” sponsored by the Women's Research and Resource Center, this short course will be a sociological exploration of the “Barbie doll” as a cultural icon. Students planning to participate in the contest can complement their creative work with this academic component. Others may simply choose to join us for a provocative discussion of an important piece of U.S. popular culture. There are no prerequisites. In addition to attendance, students will be responsible for reading a short text and will produce a piece of scholarly writing. The course has a suppressed line number, so interested students should contact Rosemary Powers directly at rpowers@eou.edu or by phone at 962-3819.

Our Mission at the WRRC

The WRRC is dedicated to providing ongoing education on women's issues and other related justice issues. The center is a safe intellectual space for women and other diverse groups who experience the challenges of discrimination. The facility provides research materials on women's issues, experts on gender inequality, referrals to campus and community organization, and online resources.  WRRC's goal is to establish and maintain a strong, active presence on campus and in the community through center-sponsored activities.

If you just need a friendly ear, we are ready to listen, give you guidance, and provide research materials and information that may help you. The WRRC also houses NOW (National Organization of Women) and VOX (Voices for planned Parenthood).

Everyone is welcome at the Women's Center. Our services, pamphlets, journals, and Internet sources are provided for free.

Volunteer at the Women's Center

The WRRC is seeking volunteers on an on-going basis. Support your community and even earn practicum credit by joining our volunteer staff!  Call 962-3021 for more information.
