WRRC road trip to bell hooks!
Okay, we are getting closer!

Women's Research and Resource Center ROAD TRIP!!!!
Are we there yet?

Jessie Zimmerer, WRRC Office Manager, and other women from the WRRC arranged a caravan of EOU students including, Jolene Baumunk, Dawn Lepper, Lisa Greif, Jeffrie Kingsley, Diana Radford, Donald Cody, and alumnae, Annya Ritchie and baby Ritchie, Cierra Olivia Thomas, and Chris Martin to travel to Whitman College to hear feminist author bell hooks.

At the lecture we met women from the Whitman College Multicultural Center (see photos below), and the Whitman WRRC.  These women were AWESOME!!  We exchanged information and planned to get together again.  Whitman currently has no real policies to assist with Sexual Assault.  Chris and Anya, who are EOU almunae working at Shelter from the Storm--the local DV shelter, plan to do workshops and trainings for the Whitman College Women's Center people.

SOMEONE IS EXCITED!!!
Come on people, says Jessie Zimmerer!!!

Someone is excited!

"We must find BALANCE.  In balance you will find equanimity.  We must be mindfully aware of ourselves.  We must use our imaginations."   hooks spoke of imagining yourself away from the politics of greed that move our system.

Our Fearless leaders talk!

Isn't she loveable looking?

Ms. hooks spoke of Love, sustainable environments, and changing the way in which we view poverty in America.  There is and must be hope, according to bell hooks, or we will never escape the "imperialist white supremist capitalistic patriarchal politics of greed."

Jessie Zimmerer, EOU WRRC Manager, talks to Ms. hooks after the lecture.

Other bell hooks quotes:

"Pick your battles by the most constructive outcome."

 "Activism begins within."

"Organize by appealing to sameness."

"Be in love, love people, and make connections."

"There is a resurgence of Christian Fundamentalism shaping people's lives now."

"The forces of domination are killing the spirit of resistance in us."

"Materialism is all that matters, which is a breeding ground for faciscm."

"The work of love is difficult, as it should be.  There is no love without sacrifice.  We must give up some privilege ourselves."

"Desire to end domination is the will to love."

Paraphrased:

There is a fundamental difference between the way we think and our behavior; theory is not reinforced with our behavior.  People are afraid to be active and stand behind what they say.  So we must find balance.

Carry a card in your wallet or your back pocket that says:

"CARE

COMMITTMENT

KNOWLEDGE

RESPONSIBILITY

RESPECT

LOVE."

When you are confronted with a situation where you want to lash out with a "killing rage" you read that card and be sure to respond with care, committment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and love.
