A special Science Center ribbon tying ceremony will be held at EOU at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.

La Grande, Oregon - A special ribbon-tying ceremony marking the opening of the new Eastern Oregon University Science Center wing will begin at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 4.

"We are celebrating the partnerships that made the EOU Science Center possible," said EOU President Dixie Lund. "This event marks the midway point for an endeavor that has captivated the hearts, minds and indeed the souls of not just the University campus, but also a community, a region and a state.

"From our own faculty and staff to our city and county partners, to our regional neighbors, state and federal legislators, economic development agencies, sister universities, and even our own families, this is a building that is so much more than concrete and plaster. It is a building built with a vision that says there is something here at Eastern that makes a difference. That difference is people."

Several key Oregon leaders from the legislature and members of the community will be on hand, along with presidents from the Oregon University System, former EOU president Phil Creighton, and other Oregon leaders. Welcomes from guests will start the ceremony followed by tours of the building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Refreshments will also be available.

The Science Center wing construction was started on April 1, 2002, and the Badgley Hall renovation will be completed by Spring 2004. The 67,000-square foot addition is ready for students fall term starting on Monday, Sept. 29. Partners with EOU in the project include the Oregon Health & Science University's nursing program, Oregon State University's agriculture program, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's fish pathology lab and Portland State University's engineering program.

At 1 p.m., EOU's football team hosts Montana Tech in the Mountaineers' newly renovated stadium. Community Stadium, in its second home game of the season, features new press boxes, bleacher additions, concession booths and restrooms.

"We are very pleased to have the new stadium renovation project completed and guests can go from the ribbon-tying ceremony to the EOU football game at 1 p.m.," said Lund.
