OHSU RFD PROGRAM RECEIVES $100,000 Published: Feb. 5, 2004 by C.J. Gish La Grande, Oregon - Eastern Oregon University's Rural Frontier Deliver (RFD) program will receive $100,000 to continue and expand. U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) announced the $2.75 million package in federal funding for Oregon health and human services programs on Thursday, Jan. 22. These funds were included in the Fiscal Year 2004 omnibus funding measure that will be signed by the president. "We are so appreciative of Congressman (Greg) Walden, Senator Smith and Senator Wyden's commitment to EOU and their hard work in securing these funds," said EOU President Dixie Lund. "EOU and OHSU have enjoyed a strong partnership for over 25 years and this money will help us continue to work together to offer undergraduate nursing programs to non-traditional, place bound students in Eastern Oregon." The RFD program provides educational resources and training for rural nurses. The program seeks to educate and place 18 new registered nurses in eastern Oregon every year for the next five years. The objective of the RFD program is to curtail the critical shortage of registered nurses in the remote counties of eastern Oregon. "This is wonderful news," said Jeanne Bowden, associate dean at EOU's Oregon Health and Science University School of Nursing. "The appropriation means that we can continue and expand the Rural Frontier Program providing educational resources and training for nurses to provide for unmet health care needs for residents who live and work in the frontier/rural communities of eastern Oregon." The RFD program's classes are available in Burns, Johns Day, Ontario and, coming this spring, in Pendleton.
