The Eastern Oregon University athletic department has announced that it will break ground on two new multi-purpose athletic complexes this week.

The ground-breaking ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Dignitaries scheduled to attend are Interim President Dixie Lund, Vice President for Student Affairs Sheldon Nord, Vice President for Business and Finance Darlene
Morgan, Director of Facilities and Planning Matt Graves, Mike Becker of Mike Becker Construction, and Rob Cashell, EOU athletic director.

Becker Construction, a La Grande contractor, was awarded the contract last month to build two competition size football/soccer fields on land just south of Community
Stadium between C and E streets.

Becker Construction was the general contractor for the Quinn Coliseum expansion project that began in 2000 and was completed in 2002.

"The main goal of our firm is to provide superior products and service to our customers," Becker said. "Our company has proudly worked with Eastern Oregon
University for over 20 years."

Becker has worked on many EOU projects, including Alikut Hall construction, Dick Stenard Memorial Garden, Alumni Room, sand volleyball courts, president's
residence remodel, Ackerman Hall remodel, Inlow Hall window upgrade, tennis dome demolition and bookstore remodel.

"We are very pleased to be working with Mike Becker Construction on this project," Cashell said. "This is another great example of a positive partnership with a
well-respected local company."

One field will be used for competition soccer, with all the amenities, including a new scoreboard.

The other field will help alleviate crowding during football practices and intramural activities such as flag football, and could be available for other student activities and
off-campus use contracts. The soccer and football practice fields that are located just beyond the left-center field fence of the softball field are scheduled for possible
residence hall construction in the near future.
