Luther King Day events planned
A variety of events have been going on in celebration
of Martin Luther King Day, some of them taking place on the EOU campus
with student and faculty participation, and others off campus:
Friday, January 17: 7:00 p.m. Film Showing,
EOU Zabel Hall 142
The Gender Studies Program at Eastern Oregon University will sponsor
a showing of the acclaimed and powerfully-moving Russian anti-war
film Come and See. 7:00 p.m. in Zabel Hall 142. (Directed by Elem
Klimov,1985, USSR,143 minutes, in Russian with English subtitles).
A young boy witnesses the destruction of a small Belorussian village,
leveled by the Nazis during their 1942 invasion. A ground-breaking,
highly acclaimed Russian film that
has been called one of the greatest war movies ever made. Come and
See is an impressionistic and haunting vision of the horrors of war.

Saturday, January 18: PEACE WALK 10:00 a.m.
A family event that involves a short walk to Albany St., moments of
silence, readings, and songs. Meet at the corner of Island Ave. and
Walton
Road in La Grande. (For more information call 963-5210).
Sunday, January 19: Prayers for Peace Services
4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
The United Methodist Churches of Cove and La Grande will host a time
of
prayer and reflection for the community. Cove event at 4:30 p.m. (
Church
located on Highway 237 as it approaches Cove). La Grande event at
6:30 p.m.

Monday, January 20 at 7:00 in Zabel Hall 142 EOU:
Martin Luther King Jr.
The Dangerous Path of Peace.
An evening event in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. to which
parents
could bring their children. A video that portrays Dr. King's life
will be
shown to be followed by a talk by Dr. Regina Braker on the costs of
being a
peacemaker and what we might learn from grass-roots recipients of
the Nobel
peace prize like Dr. King. Teachers and parents are encouraged to
invite
students to compose writings or pictures on the subject of peace that
could

Tuesday, January 21 Vigil 5:15 p.m.
Pathways to Peace will host a candlelight vigil at the corner of Fir
and
Adams in La Grande.
Tuesday, January 21. The Anthropology of War, 7:00
p.m. Zabel Hall, rm. 201.
Dr. Kathleen Dahl will present a public lecture on "The Anthropology
of
War," arguing that the research of anthropologists demonstrates
that war
should not be considered as "natural behavior" for human
