La Grande, Oregon - Eastern Oregon University is preparing for its 74th school year when it welcomes new students during dorm move-in day on Saturday, Sept. 20. The new students will spend a week with faculty and admissions staff participating in activities around the region and getting acquainted with the campus. The weekend starts with dorm move in starting at 1 p.m. and a tour of La Grande at 3 and 4 p.m. On Sunday, an Inlow Hall Open House and student I.D. pictures will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by a welcoming session for students and families from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Separate sessions will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for students and families and a family barbecue will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. before families leave. From Monday through Friday, new students will go to orientation sessions and take part in Eastrek, where students will have the opportunity to check out the region via backpacking in the Eagle Cap Mountains, hiking and fishing in the Wallowa Whitman National Forest, rock climbing, mountain biking in the Blue Mountains or exploring downtown Portland. The weekend of Saturday, Sept. 27, all EOU students start returning to La Grande and the campus. The weekend will be filled with a variety of activities, including home volleyball and women's soccer games on Friday and Saturday. On Monday, Sept. 29, fall term classes begin. Fall Convocation will be in McKenzie Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 3:15 p.m. with a reception following the event. The Science Center wing Ribbon-Tying Ceremony will be on Saturday, Oct. 4, starting at 10:30 a.m. Partners involved in the project from the City of La Grande, Union County, the region and state, along with community members and EOU faculty, staff and students, will be on hand for the event. Tours of the Science Center will follow the ceremony introduction. Homecoming is slated for the weekend of Friday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 11. The Mountaineer Madness Golf Scramble will kick off the weekend at the Buffalo Peak Golf Course in Union starting at 11 a.m. A Mountaineer Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony is planned for 6 p.m. in Hoke 309 and the annual bonfire will be at 8:30 p.m. behind Community Stadium. On Oct. 11, the Mountaineer softball and baseball teams will play alumni from past teams at 9 a.m. The EOU cross country invitational starts at 10 a.m. and a downtown parade will roll at 10:30 a.m. down Adams Ave. The Mountaineer football team hosts Pacific Lutheran at 1 p.m. followed by the annual Fifth Quarter celebration in the Hoke Main Lounge and Mac's Grill.
