Three
players, one team to be inducted into Mountaineer Hall of Fame Published: Sept. 23, 2003 by C.J. Gish La Grande, Oregon - The Mountaineer 1969-70 men's basketball team has left their mark at Eastern Oregon University as they become the first squad to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The team, along with three athletes, will be inducted into the Mountaineer Hall of Fame at a ceremony starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in Hoke 309. Refreshments will be available by 6 p.m. The athletes who were selected include Renee Henslee-Miller (women's basketball 1981-83), Bob Warsaw (football 1979-80) and Romano Romani (football 1951-52). The 1969-70 men's basketball team, the first Mountaineer squad to be inducted into the EOU Hall of Fame, finished with a 19-11 record and went 14-2 to win the Oregon Collegiate Conference title. Three players - Emory Moore, Mike Moore, and Kreg Wishard - were selected to the All-OCC team, with Emory earning All-NAIA District 2 honors. The team defeated Warner Pacific in the district semifinals, but fell to Linfield in the NAIA District 2 Finals in the best-of-three series. The squad set a school record by winning 12 straight games and started OCC play with a 13-0 mark. Henslee-Miller, a teacher at Powder Valley High School in North Powder, played basketball from 1980-83 at EOU and led the AIAW Division III in scoring with 20.2 points per game and 14 rebounds in the 1981-82 season. The following season she averaged 18.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest. Along with playing basketball, she played softball for three seasons from 1981-83, batting .422 in 13 games with 15 RBIs during the 1983 season. She was voted Mountaineer Female Athlete of the Year for the 1981-82 and 1982-83 school years. Warsaw, who works for Children and Family Services in Bend, played on the offensive line and received first team All-Evergreen Conference, All-NAIA District 2 and Associated Press All-Coast Team honors following the 1980 season. He was also co-captain on the Mountaineer team that finished as co-Evergreen Conference champions. In 1979, he was named second team All-Evergreen Conference. In February 1981, Warsaw signed with the Ottawa RoughRiders of the Canadian Football League. Romani, of Redmond, played on the offensive line and
was named All-OCC in 1951 and 1952. He also played baseball in 1954
and was a two-year member of the Eastern Oregon College Intercollegiate
Knights. He went on to coach baseball, football and wrestling at the
high school level from 1957-93 in Neah-Kah-Nie, North Bend and Redmond. |
