JANUARY
January 16: Human Services to go one-stop [The Observer]

They've been seperated by walls and even buildings — the people who provide social services to Union County residents — but by the end of the year, many of them will work together in one huge room in a new building in South La Grande. The proposed building, to sit on Eastern Oregon University property on Gekeler Lane, will reflect a new organization of the state Department of Human Services.

 

January 17: Women's basketball on a roll [The Observer]

National rankings have been so rare for the Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team that coach Anji Weissenfluh could not remember if the team had ever been ranked. And Weissenfluh has been arround the program  since 1989, when she started a four-year playing career for the Mountaineers.

 

January 21: Olympic Torch Relay/Winterfest 2002 [Baker City Herald]

It may be mid-winter, but January is starting to heat up in Baker City. The Olympic Torch Relay arrives on Friday. The community is planning a variety of events, and not just for Friday, the day the torch is carried through city streets.

 

January21: Eastern loses; win streak ends [The Observer]

Eastern Oregon's women's basketball winning streak ended at 14 games Saturday night. The Concordia Cavaliers outshot, outrebounded and outplayed the No.18 Mountaineers in their 87-66 Cascade Collegiate Conference victory.

 

January 23: In the midst of Argentina's crisis [The Observer]

"It was the experience of a lifetime," Lori Shelton says. Adventure, travel, education — Shelton found it all during December. Also risk, uncertainty, danger and illness in a foreign land as people revolted and governments tumbled day by day. Shelton, a 19-year-old La Grande native and a sophomore at Eastern Oregon University, followed through on a dream and accepted a month-long visit in Buenos Aires, Argentain, with her college roommates' family.

 

January 29: Dixie Lund receives OWHE award [EOU release]

Twenty-nine years of hard work and being in the right place at the right time paid off for Dixie Lund, dean of distance education at Eastern Oregon University, on Friday. Lund was presented the Oregon Women in Higher Education 2002 Service Award at the OWHE 22nn annual conference at the Governors Hotel in Portland.

 

January 29: EOU selects John Miller as next Provost [EOU release]

Following a national search, John S. Miller, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Southeastern Louisiana University, has been named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Eastern Oregon University, according to President Phillip Creighton.

 

January 29: EOU students help out in National Mentoring Month [EOU release]
A child's mind is like a piece of clay —character can be molded and lifelong impressions are made at an early age. Twenty-three Eastern Oregon University students are taking that clay and hope to be positive role models during the next five months to students at Pendleton's Sunridge Middle School.
